I stored tap water for emergency situations in two of these 15 gallon barrels. They were filled mostly to the brim with some bleach to prevent bacterial growth. After 2 years I opened them to change out the water (yeah, I should have done it earlier) but the water remained fresh and clear (at least to the naked eye) and the smell of bleach was still evident, indicating the seal was truly tight on both. Both were stored in a cool, dry basement for the duration.The only minor problem is that the bottles are too heavy for one person to lift when full. In order to empty them it’s necessary to use a siphon to empty about half of the water, then it’s fairly easy to lift the barrel, but this isn’t a major issue as they don’t need to be moved except to change out the water (assuming you are using these for emergency storage purposes).
